How To Design Parts for SLS 3D Printing

Many product designers have switched to additive manufacturing or 3D printing due to its accuracy and fast operation. However, they might wonder which technique to use to print functional 3D parts. In this context, we will discuss one of the standard 3D printing techniques, i.e., SLS.

What Is SLS, And How Does It Work?

SLS stands for Selective Laser Sintering, and it involves applying laser beams on selected areas of the part that are made. Sintering refers to the process of heating a substance without melting it.

Like any other 3D printing technique, the prerequisite in SLS 3D printing is also to create a CAD-based design at first. Then, once the software prepares the final blueprint after eliminating errors, the operator transfers the file to the SLS equipment.

SLS uses polymer in a powdered form to make the items one layer after another. The process begins by heating the powder to the required temperature. Then, the recoating device spreads this powder onto the base plate. The laser beam then studies the design and sinters the powder in selected areas. The remaining powder that the laser does not sinter helps support the succeeding structures.

What are the Design Specifications for SLS Printing?

To design parts efficiently for SLS 3D printing, one must adhere to certain specifications. For instance, the minimum thickness of the layers should lie in the range of 0.8mm and 2 mm. If there are holes in the structure, their diameters should be greater than 1.5 mm. To clean the prepared item post-production, escape holes must be incorporated with at least 3.5 mm diameters. If the design involves text engraves, the same should be in font size 14 and preferably in font style Sans Serif.
